Amantea Excited for Second Opportunity to Race in Tulsa Shootout

Inside Line Promotions – MOUNT POCONO, Pa. (Dec. 30, 2018) – Joey Amantea is about to embark upon his second career trip to the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout.
Amantea made his debut at the marquee micro sprint event during the most recent edition, when he competed in both the winged and non-wing outlaw divisions. He’ll be back in both classes this week when the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla., hosts the 34th edition of the race from Wednesday through Saturday.
“It’s really cool seeing all the cars and meeting new people,” he said. “Everyone is really nice and helps everyone out. The racing is great and competitive. Everybody is fighting for every spot.”
Amantea noted he has more confidence entering the upcoming show after learning throughout his debut in December 2017.
“I learned that the middle is very bad for the cars,” he said. “You’ll spin yourself out. It’s either run the bottom or the top so that’s what you set your car up for.
“In non-wing outlaw I had never ran on a flat track in a 600cc micro sprint. I was getting used to not being able to run everywhere. I started going through the middle and guys were picking me off. In the winged (class) I spun myself out. I couldn’t grasp the concept of not driving through the middle. We had fast cars, but just didn’t use them the right way.”
Amantea pushed himself throughout the 2018 season and he anticipates that will also help during his return to the Tulsa Shootout.
“This year we’ve branched out a lot more and ran about 35 more races than we did last year and ran with more competitive guys,” he said. “That helped teach me the mentality of running with guys like this.”
